Stanford Alpaca is an open-source, instruction-following language model developed by researchers from Stanford University. It is based on the LLaMA (Large Language Model) 7B model and fine-tuned on 52,000 instruction-following data generated by techniques outlined in the Self-Instruct paper. This project aims to create a model that can follow instructions with high fidelity, making it a useful tool for a wide range of applications. The development of Alpaca leveraged the recent release of Meta’s LLaMA models and utilized a dataset generated by prompting an existing language model to produce instruction-following demonstrations. This approach significantly reduced the cost of data generation to less than $500 using the OpenAI API. Fine-tuning the LLaMA 7B model on this dataset took about 3 hours on 8 80GB A100 GPUs, costing less than $100 on most cloud compute providers.

One of the primary use cases of Stanford Alpaca includes offline applications where it can serve as a powerful tool across various contexts due to its ability to generate data based on user instructions. The model has been preliminarily evaluated and found to perform similarly to OpenAI’s text-davinci-003 model, despite its smaller size and the modest amount of instruction-following data it was trained on. This comparison was done through a blind pairwise comparison between Alpaca 7B and text-davinci-003, where Alpaca showed very similar performance.

However, Alpaca has some known limitations, such as tendencies toward hallucination, toxicity, and stereotypes, common among language models. These limitations underscore the importance of further research and development to mitigate such issues.

As for the costs associated with Alpaca, the project demonstrates an impressively low compute spend. With only $600 of compute spend, Alpaca was able to achieve performance comparable to significantly larger models. This efficiency makes it an attractive option for researchers and developers operating within limited budgets.

In terms of assets released to the public, the Stanford Alpaca project has made available a demo, the dataset used for fine-tuning, and the data generation and training code. There are plans to release the model weights in the future, pending permissions from the creators of LLaMA.
