Google DeepMind has launched GenCast, an AI-driven weather forecasting model that delivers faster and more accurate forecasts up to 15 days in advance. Unlike traditional models that solve complex physical equations, GenCast learns from four decades of historical weather data to predict a range of possible future conditions.
This probabilistic approach provides a more complete understanding of potential weather scenarios. In evaluations, GenCast outperformed the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather
Forecasts’ ensemble system in 97.2% of cases tested, and excelled in forecasting extreme weather events such as heat waves and cyclones. In addition, GenCast generates forecasts in just eight minutes using a single processor, significantly reducing computation time compared to traditional methods.
